The majority of asylum seekers and refugees who reach our shores are keen to make a lasting contribution to society. They want to leave past trauma behind, move on with their lives and settle in the country that has become their new home.
A key skill for them is proficiency in the English language. Without this, they will always struggle to find their place and relate to others around them. They will also find many doors and opportunities closed to them.
It is with this in mind that we are developing language teaching and support for asylum seekers or refugees in our area. We are grateful for Government funding through the Coronavirus Community Support Fund that will enable us to engage teachers for this project but still need volunteers, both those with English teaching experience as well as those who are willing to just sit and chat.
If you know anyone who might benefit from this service, please forward them this information – you can also download a leaflet as a pdf or as a jpg image. Thank you!
